Choosing Uniform Fabric: GSM, Blends & Performance
Fabric is the single decision that most affects how a uniform performs over months of wear, and it's usually the one buyers spend the least time on before requesting a sample. GSM (grams per square meter) tells you weight. Fiber blend tells you how it handles heat, moisture, and wrinkling. Neither number alone tells you whether a fabric is right for a given role, that comes from matching both to how the garment actually gets used and washed.
GSM by category
These are starting ranges, not fixed rules, a specific role's conditions can push a program outside its category's typical range.
- Hospitality and food service: roughly 120–160 GSM. Breathability matters over a full shift, and these roles are usually indoors with less abrasion exposure than industrial settings.
- Corporate and facility: roughly 180–220 GSM. Mid-weight fabric balances structure and comfort for shirting, polos, and everyday office or front-of-house wear.
- Healthcare and medical: roughly 130–190 GSM, depending on garment type. Scrubs and tunics generally sit lighter for comfort during long shifts, while lab coats and outer layers run heavier.
- Industrial workwear: 220–300+ GSM. These roles need fabric that resists abrasion, tears, and repeated heavy-duty laundering.
Fiber blends
Poly-cotton blends, commonly 65/35 or 80/20 polyester to cotton, are the standard choice across most uniform categories because they balance the two fibers' strengths. Cotton improves breathability and comfort against the skin. Polyester improves wrinkle resistance, shape retention, and how quickly the garment dries after washing, a meaningful factor for programs on tight laundering turnarounds. A higher polyester ratio generally suits roles with frequent commercial washing; a higher cotton ratio suits roles where comfort against skin matters more than fast turnaround.
100% cotton is still specified where comfort and breathability outweigh every other factor, but it wrinkles more, shrinks more without a controlled finishing process, and takes longer to dry. 100% polyester shows up in performance-focused or heavy-abrasion contexts, but can feel less breathable in hot environments without a moisture-wicking finish.
Woven vs. knitted
Woven fabric (yarns interlaced at right angles on a loom) gives shirts, trousers, and structured garments a crisp, stable finish that holds its shape. Knitted fabric (yarn looped together) gives polos, T-shirts, and anything that needs to move with the wearer natural stretch. Most uniform programs use both across different garment types within the same order rather than standardizing on one.
Matching fabric to decoration and climate
Fabric choice isn't independent of the rest of the spec. Heavier, tighter-woven fabric holds embroidery stitching more securely over time than a very light knit. Hot, humid climates or physically active roles benefit from a moisture-wicking finish or a higher-cotton blend regardless of category norms. If your workforce spans multiple climates or shift types, it's worth specifying fabric by role rather than applying one fabric choice across an entire program.
Reading a fabric recommendation from a manufacturer
When a manufacturer recommends a fabric, ask what's driving the recommendation, cost, durability, comfort, or something specific to your stated use case, rather than accepting "this is our standard fabric" as a full answer. FAQ
Is a higher GSM always more durable? Generally yes, but durability isn't the only variable that matters. Higher GSM also means more weight, less breathability, and typically a higher cost per garment. The right choice depends on the role: a kitchen uniform and a warehouse coverall have different needs even at the same company.
What's the difference between GSM and ounces per square yard? Both measure fabric weight. GSM is the international standard used in most tech packs; ounces per square yard is more common in North American sourcing. They convert directly (1 oz/yd² is approximately 33.9 GSM), so either can appear on a spec depending on region.
Can I mix fabric weights within one uniform program? Yes, and it's common. A single program covering multiple roles, kitchen staff, front-of-house, management, often specifies different fabric weights for each, rather than one fabric across every garment type.
Does fabric choice affect color matching? Yes. The same Pantone reference can read slightly differently on different fiber blends and fabric weights, since fiber content affects how dye takes.
